Schedule time to rest

Schedule time to rest

Hey Bloomers! 🌼💛 Life sometimes gets busy, and even overwhelming. During these periods, you may think that your time is better used working on all your deadlines and nothing else. After all, the more you work, the sooner you will finish. Right? Well, not necessarily. Today’s blog post will propose the idea that when you are busy, it may be productive to schedule time to rest.

You are important 💛

If you take nothing else from this blog post, I hope you will at least remember this: your well-being is important. YOU are important, and so is the way that you feel. In everything you do, therefore, you should aim to ensure that you are taking care of yourself and as far as possible prioritising your well-being. This has multiple benefits in addition to the mental health benefits. One of these is increased productivity.

The link between productivity and rest

James Clear defines productivity as “a measure of efficiency of a person completing a task”. Considering this definition, would a person efficiently complete a task by resting? Yes. When you are overwhelmed, your mind may be clouded and work at less than its fullest potential. You may also be less creative and simply focused on completing the tasks at hand. A task that could have potentially taken less time ends up taking more time because you are not working in your best state or are easily distracted due to the thought of all the tasks you need to complete.

During such times, it is not only helpful, but vital, to take a break. Taking a break ensures that you clear your mind and enter a state of relaxation. You are then able to take that new state of being – clear mindedness and relaxation – into the work that needs to be done. Because you don’t feel as overwhelmed anymore, you might even end up enjoying what you are doing, or at the very least, not hating it.

Schedule time to rest

It’s sometimes difficult to convince people to prioritise their well-being and rest when they are busy, because naturally, their question becomes, “how is all this work going to get done then?”. If you are one of these people, remember that not only does prioritising rest help with your state of mind, but it also helps you to complete all the work that you are so worried about, and FEEL BETTER WHILST DOING IT!

However, even with this understanding, it might still be difficult and seem impractical to find time to rest. After all, all the time available is being dedicated to the tasks at hand. The solution to this is simple: Schedule time to rest, because if you don’t, you simply won’t do it.

Practical method

One way that busy or overwhelmed people can get through all their tasks is through a to-do list. The importance of such a list cannot be understated. It allows one to take all the jumbled up tasks they are thinking of in their head and organise them somewhere where they can be seen physically. Allocating time to each task makes everything easier to handle. In the same way, you have to allocate time to rest on your to-do list, or in your diary.

Each person is different and so is the amount of time they need to rest, but put it on your list. That way, it won’t feel like you are “wasting” time resting because there is time allocated to the other tasks as well. This will show you that you are able to finish those tasks and still make time to rest.

Not only is resting good for your well-being, but it also works wonders for your productivity. Schedule time to rest.

Thank you Ruva for an insightful post as usual. I already feel overwhelmed even though it’s just the beginning of the year. So, the earlier I create my “to do lists” and schedule my rest time, the better. I am definitely on it, and always appreciate learning from you.

Really great post. I always try to schedule everything because I find this works best for me now that I work full-time. And since I work remotely, it’s good to have a schedule so I don’t work too much or play too much. I do like to add resting times to my schedule so I get breaks throughout the day.
